A Christmas Romance

Snow flakes drifted through the wind on this Christmas Eve night. A violet furred ferret made her way through the deep snow, not another soul out in the cold with her. She was freezing by now, because she refused to wear anything but her usual red clothes. Each step she took was a loud crunch in the snow, but she could see the house up ahead now. Smoke was trailing out of the chimney, and the sounds of laughter could be heard.

Her skin almost frozen she hurried up to the door, and then knocked on it hurriedly. “Who is it?” Someone sang on the other side.

With a shiver she said, “Wendy!”

The door flew open revealing a nice warm red hedgehog, with a Santa-like scarf around his neck. “Hello there! What are you doing here on Christmas Eve?”

She could feel the heat from the inside, and already began to feel comfortable. Behind the hedgehog, were a well lit Christmas tree and a few other animals sitting around a fire. “Well I’m here for my prize!” She smiled.

“Your… Prize?” The red hedgehog tilted his head in confusion.

Wendy nodded. “Yes, Sky, my prize! Remember, your story that no one is even reading anymore? We had to guess the secret character and you said you’d just give the prize to me.”

Sky shot up. “Oh! That prize!” Before suddenly looking awkward. “Uhh… It’s a funny story really… About your prize…”

“Yeah, what do I win?” She smiled.

Looking for a way out, Sky said, “Um… I’d love to give you your prize, Wendy… But you see…” He looked at his beautiful Christmas tree. “My Christmas tree is on fire! Yeah!”

Wendy looked at it, seeing no flames present at all. “It’s not really on-.”

Sky lit a match and threw it on the Christmas tree. “Yes it is!” He smiled as it began to be engulfed by flames. The screams of the people around the fire place filled her ears. “Sorry, I gotta go now! Merry Christmas!” He slammed the door on her face.

With a sigh, Wendy turned around and began walking through the lonely snow covered park. What was she supposed to do now?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Darkness covered the hidden lab under the city. Two figures could be seen standing in it. One very tall, with a large mustache, and one slightly shorter than the other, with two crimson gleaming eyes. “Metal Sonic, you’ve disobeyed me for the last time.” The tall one growled.

The sapphire robot known as Metal Sonic clenched a metal claw in aggravation. He had gotten back to his form after his defeat from Super Sonic, mainly because his master thought he looked a lot cooler with a cape and long spikes. “Well what are you going to do to me then, ‘master?’” He said in a mocking tone.

With a grunt, the master put a hand on his chin. A Santa hat could be seen on his head. “Well, seeing how it’s Christmas, I won’t destroy you.”

“How nice of you.”

The scientist began tapping his foot on the tiled floor. “How about we use you on an experiment? I’ll make you a living breathing hedgehog.” He smirked. “And then I’ll throw you out in the cold, to die.”

“Delightful.”

“It’s better to die with a soul, then die and not have a soul, Metal.”

The robot crossed his arms. His strong belief was that there was no such thing as a soul, no such thing as love, and all feelings were nothing but a bunch of chemicals inside the human body, and no more. “Now, come with me Metal.” The master ordered.

Seeing nothing better he could do, Metal Sonic followed through the darkness. In his vision was a circular tile for him to stand on. “Go right there.” The master lifted a hand up to point at the tile. Metal did as he was told, and stood up straight. Pushing a few buttons, the scientist made a glass pod lower down over the robot. Metal didn’t flinch.

“Are you ready to become a living breathing animal?”

Metal Sonic shrugged. “I’m just going to die after, so I don’t care.”

“That’s the spirit! Full power!” He screamed, pulling down a lever.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wendy trudged through the snow, feeling lonelier then ever. She was stuck all the way in Station Square, away from home. With no home to go to, she kept walking through the park, keeping her arms tightly wrapped around herself. Snow flakes continued to fall on her body, only aiding her on her way to freezing to death.

Up ahead, she could see the outline of a snow covered park bench and a lamppost by its side. Moving slower than usual she got to the bench, and wiped the snow off, so she could sit. “No one at all…”

She couldn’t just stay out in the snow like this all night. It was starting to snow harder, and she was already turning numb. It’s not like anyone cared about her anyways… That stupid Sky would set his house on fire before he would befriend her.

Why was she so lonely now? She knew she had friends… Just maybe though she…

Huh? What was that over there?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Metal Sonic fell down to the floor after the glass pod was lifted. “Well, Metal, it looks like it was a success! How does it feel?”

His entire body was furry now. Yet he could still feel the cold ground beneath. He could feel… A heart beat? Metal tried to respond, but found that it was harder than he was used to. “You have a mouth now, Metal.”

He got up to his feet, his knees trembling. “A… Mouth?” He moved his lips with surprise. Metal Sonic lifted his hands. No more were there claws, but two white gloved hands.

The one he had once referred to as Master, he now knew was Dr. Eggman. “Well, Metal, it seems I can indeed turn robots into living breathing creatures.” Eggman looked at him carefully. “But, now I’m bored of it. So long, Metal.” He pressed a button.

Metal Sonic felt the tile beneath his feet start to quiver. And then a burst of excitement came into his body, as the tile shot up into the air, throwing him out of the lab quickly. This excitement feeling… It was surprise. He didn’t like it very much.

The next thing he knew, his skin was freezing, hearing and feeling the wind against his body, cutting it like a thousand sharp needles. Metal Sonic got up to his feet and took a look around the surroundings. Snow. Endless snow. What was he supposed to do now?

His foot crunched into the snow and he began to walk.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wendy saw something in the vast hills of white. There was a slight twitch in the great white blankness, but that was all she needed. Without another thought, she ran towards it, the snow falling harder now.

She came up to a large pile of snow now, lined with a dark blue. There was someone under it! Wendy quickly brushed away the ice cold snow to see the figure under it. He was tall, blue, and his spikes had silver streaked in them. It was a hedgehog she knew. Still not thinking about it, she continued to stare at the unconscious hedgehog, his eyes shut tight.

It wasn’t long before he was staring back.

Wendy yelped and jumped back, his red eyes startling her. “What are you doing?” The male’s deep voice commanded.

“I uh saw you in the snow! You’re going to freeze to death!”

The male turned his eyes away. “I don’t care if I die.”

Wendy grabbed onto his hand, and tried to pull him up. “Don’t talk like that, now come on, you need to get warmed up!”

Forced onto his feet the blue hedgehog pulled his hand away from hers. “Go away and let me die in peace.”

Looking desperately into the stranger’s eyes she quickly asked, “Why do you want to die?”

Returning the gaze with a glare he said, “I have no purpose.”

Wendy shook her head and grabbed his hand again, forcing him to walk with her. “I’m sure there’s someone missing you out here on Christmas Eve, you must have a purpose! Come on!”

The hedgehog was obviously terribly weakened, although he struggled to get out of her grasp, he had little energy to do so. “No one misses me, I have no one, do you understand?” He growled.

Wendy continued to walk forward. “Sure you do! I’ll be your friend how about that? Now stop complaining and struggling!”

She didn’t know if the hedgehog had accepted her offer of friendship, but he did stop struggling at least. It was about five minutes later, that Wendy found herself a nice quiet alley way, which hid them from the freezing snow. Here in Station Square, she had no home, but she needed to help this guy out!

With a smile, she found a large box, big enough for three people to huddle in. The stranger obviously saw that smile. “You’re joking right?” He said in an annoyed tone.

Shoving the stranger in there, she replied, “Nope!” And threw herself in the box as well. His head hit the ceiling of the box, even when crouched down, but hopefully he’ll live.

Feeling slightly less cold, she looked at the shivering hedgehog. “What’s your name anyways, mister… guy?”

He gave her another glare. “Metal Sonic.”

Uh oh. This guy might be one of those insane guys. “Uh, you don’t look like you’re made of metal…”

“I was.” He said.

Wendy let out a nervous smile. “R-really, is that so?” Maybe she shouldn’t have stuffed herself in a box with this guy. She looked into his eyes once again, but didn’t see insanity. She saw a poor cold lonely hedgehog. “Why do you have no one, Metal Sonic?”

Metal continued to shiver, until he wrapped his arms around himself. “This blasted shivering is horrible! I hate being a live hedgehog…”

Despite the fact that he ignored her, she decided to continue to ask him questions. “What are you talking about?”

Metal’s eyes grew distant, he was remembering something. “Do you know anyone by the name of Dr. Eggman?”

She nodded. He was that evil genius always taking over the city with crazy ideas. Who knows what that guy could do…

“I was a robot before today. I was made as a copy of Sonic, to defeat him.”

Wendy let out a gasp, disbelieving him. Then again, strange things happen all the time in Station Square. That would explain why he had no one.

“As a punishment for disobeying him…” Metal continued. “He experimented on me, and made me a living being, before throwing me out here in this damn cold to die. I never felt such pains as a robot before.” His eyes looked to the purple ferret in front of him. “What is your name?” He asked, but it seemed much more like a demand.

Slightly startled she stuttered, “Uh, W-Wendy!” Oops, now she told a complete stranger her name!

Metal Sonic slightly closed the box flap to keep the warmth in, but it only made it darker inside the box. “Wendy… You said you would be my friend?” His eyes seemed to shine in the dark.

Feeling nervous, she pushed back against the edge of the box, sweating slightly. “W-well, t-that all depends on what kind of friend! Because you know, I-I can call the police if you try anything on me!”

Metal tilted his head. “I don’t understand.”

“Uh…” She let out a deep sigh. “You have no idea what I’m talking about do you? Like… If you really were a robot… You don’t know what a pervert is…”

“No, I do not.” He shook his head. “I’m not accustomed to these strange feelings you living-beings get.”

Wendy let out a little giggle, deciding maybe she’d believe this guy for now. After all, it was Christmas, a time of miracles. “Well then, Metal, I’ll be your friend.”

Something inside him seemed to burst up, and he unconsciously said, “Really?”

With a nod Wendy stretched out her legs, even though Metal was on the other side, it was a little test of hers. The hedgehog’s eyes didn’t even glance away from her eyes. “Yes, really I’ll be your friend, Metal!” She smiled, pleased that this guy really wasn’t a pervert. “How does that make you feel?”

He shook his head. “I feel less cold. Well, my insides do at least. Why would you being my friend make my organs warmer?”

Wendy laughed. “It’s not your organs that feel warmer, Metal! It’s your soul.”

“You and Dr. Eggman spoke of this, ‘soul’ but I do not believe they can exist.” He crossed his arms stubbornly, but there was something that showed he wanted to believe they did. He was new to emotions, so he doesn’t know how to hide them well.

The purple ferret waved a finger at him jokingly. “Tsk tsk, that’s what I’d expect from a robot!” She smiled. “But everyone has a soul; it’s as real as the hand in front of you.”

Curious, Metal Sonic looked at his hand. No more claws did he have. He was feeling something on the inside. It wouldn’t be logical to say that his organs responded to her friendship. “Maybe.” He said, a stubborn frown across his face.

“That’s right, Metal!” Wendy smiled. This guy was turning out to be pretty nice. She may be stuck at Station Square for Christmas, but maybe it wasn’t all bad. The girl looked to the hedgehog, seeing that he was still shivering.

Her smile turned to a worried frown. “Are you going to be okay?”

“Of course. I’ll be just fine.” He said, still shivering.

She wanted to do something… But, there wasn’t much she could do. “Metal Sonic, would you like to talk about something?”

“Why?” He growled.

“Because that’s what friends do! Tell me about yourself will you?” She waved a finger at him again. “Come on, I saved your life.”

Metal Sonic looked slightly startled, gazing into her eyes slightly afterwards. He did not know what he was doing to create the awkward moment, but Wendy did. Her face began to turn slightly red. “Wh-what are you doing, Metal?”

“Looking.” He replied, still looking deep into her eyes.

“For what?”

“Your soul.” He said. Wendy felt her face heat up from the awkward moment. “I believe I can see your soul, Wendy. I think I like it.”

She shook her head slightly embarrassed. “Listen, Metal, you don’t just go around doing and saying things like that in the real world. It’s well… Strange.”

“I do as I please.”

Wendy let out a heavy sigh. He was stubborn, that’s for sure. “Well, are you going to tell me about yourself?”

“I will, if you tell me about yourself as well.” Metal Sonic crossed his furry arms, still shivering.

Wendy nodded in agreement. “Fine.” The blue hedgehog started. “Very long ago… Dr. Eggman created me. My mission was to destroy Sonic the Hedgehog. So I started by kidnapping a female hedgehog who…”

The conversation went on for hours into the night. At first, Wendy would ask a question, and Metal would snap at her, saying her attention was much too low. Later, when she asked, Metal would simply nod his head and say it was a very good question, and answer it happily.

Even though he had done terrible things, Wendy did not hate him. At one point she asked, “Why do you want such destruction, Metal?”

The hedgehog froze, thinking carefully about the answer. He tapped his finger against the box, but came up empty. “I do not know.”

Maybe, Metal Sonic wasn’t as terrible as he said he was. As the conversation went on, Wendy watched the hedgehog’s movements. He was a little silly at times with his world domination poses, but she simply laughed and he told her not to mock him. Wendy saw that Metal was very open with his emotions, mainly because he had not had them before, but she found it to be interesting.

Metal spoke of heroic battles, an evil genius, a betrayal to his master, his upgrade from Chaos’ power, and his fight with the legendary Super Sonic. Wendy, of course, asked if this was all true, and Metal nodded. When she saw his ruby eyes, she knew he wasn’t lying.

“…Dr. Eggman later threw me into a jail cell, where I was locked up for months.” Metal continued. “He returned, only to tell me that I was to be destroyed. Luckily, he experimented on me, and expected me to die out in the cold as a living-being.”

“Luckily?” Wendy smiled. “I thought you didn’t want to live.”

In his usual dark tone he replied, “That was before I met you, Wendy.” Thinking nothing of the compliment. He was a truthful hedgehog.

Wendy’s eyes shone with happiness. “Metal, that’s so nice of you…” She looked at him, noticing he was still cold. “I can’t have you be freezing to death, Metal.” She giggled, before crawling over to the side of the box with him. She wrapped her arms around the sapphire hedgehog in a tight embrace. “Gotta keep you warm!”

Metal Sonic seemed surprised by this. His cheeks turned slightly red, but he knew nothing of it. He looked down to her confused. “You feel… Very warm.”

Wendy began to blush slightly too. “Come on, don’t make this awkward between us, it’s just a hug to keep warm, no love involved.”

“I’ve heard of love before…” Metal Sonic had stopped trembling with cold. “I don’t think I know what it is…” He once again was looking into her eyes.

“Uh… It doesn’t matter.” Wendy smiled back at him. “Isn’t it my turn to tell about myself anyways?”

“Yes, of course, Wendy.” Metal nodded.

“Well, Metal…” She started off dramatically. “I was born at the same time with my identical twin sister, Sally, who looks nothing like me and isn’t even the same species as me…” Wendy went on, telling a tale of ferrets, rabbits, and hedgehogs, oh my.

Metal Sonic of course had a few skeptical questions, but she answered them all with glee. Glad someone was actually listening. The azure and silver hedgehog’s attention never faltered. Often times, Wendy had to tell him to stop staring, he still wasn’t used to the fact that his eyes could move.

“…So then that idiot of a hedgehog, Sky, throws a match onto the Christmas tree and says he can’t give me a present because his tree was on fire!” Wendy fumed. “He left me out here all alone!”

Metal put a hand on her head. “But, because of it, you found me.”

She rested her head against his shoulder, feeling his soft fur against her face. “Yeah, I’m glad… This is turning out to be a great Christmas after all, Metal.”

Metal Sonic tilted his head. “Will you now explain what love is?”

Sitting up with a sigh she said, “No, Metal…” She looked at him, and noticed his eyes were drooping. “You sleepy there, buddy?”

“Sleep is when…” He nearly fell over from his lack of the stuff. “Sleep is when the living ones recharge themselves, right? I believe to do so, I must close my eyes.”

Wendy nodded. “That’s right, Metal.”

He looked to her. “I will be cold… When I sleep, will you stay next to me?”

She placed her head against his furry shoulder again. “Of course, Metal. If we can become such good friends in only one night, of course I’ll stay with you.” She paused. “Always…”

“Thank you.” He said, cuddling up next to her for warmth. It wasn’t long before Wendy could hear his steady breaths of a deep sleep. His chest rising and falling in such a calm manner, soon became like a lullaby to her, putting the girl to sleep as well.

Although in a dark box in an alleyway all alone on Christmas Eve, the two were happier than they had ever been before.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Metal Sonic’s eyes twitched slightly. His consciousness flowing back into him, he felt something against his side. Opening one eyelid, he saw Wendy sleeping soundly next to him. The box was open a crack, letting a slight morning light in. He did not want to wake her, but his arms and legs needed to be stretched.

Moving quietly, he slowly stretched out one leg at a time, trying his best to make the smallest movements as possible. She still slept. Metal then stretched his right arm carefully, before looking at his left, seeing that the girl was sleeping directly on it.

Even slower than before, he steadily lifted his arm, raising Wendy’s head along with it. She let out a groan of discomfort, and Metal nearly dropped her. With a sigh, he noticed she was still sleeping. Awkwardly now, he put his right arm under his left, and held Wendy’s sleeping body up with that right arm, so he could have time to stretch his left out.

The purple ferret began to stir, and Metal froze in place, hoping she would stay asleep. Her eyelids began to open, and she saw the strange pose Metal was in. Groggily she asked, “What are you doing?...”

Gently putting her head against the box’s wall, Metal said, “I did not wish to wake you, but my arms and legs were aching.”

Still sleepy, she rubbed her eyes and yawned. “That’s okay, Metal…” Wendy stretched out as well. “…I needed to be woken up anyways.” Her eyes shot open and she was wide awake the next second.

Reading her mind, Metal smirked. “Merry Christmas, Wendy.”

“That’s right!” She hugged the hedgehog. “It’s Christmas day! Let’s get out of this dirty little box and see!” Wendy opened up the flaps and leaped out. Metal was out shortly as well.

The snow had stopped falling, and the morning sun was shining against the new fallen snow. It was a vast wonderland now; everything in sight seemed to be shining with the stuff. Wendy put her arm around Metal’s. “Wow, it’s beautiful isn’t it?”

“Yes…” He nodded, gazing out at the vast white ocean. “I’m glad you saved me last night.”

Wendy giggled. “I’m glad I met you last night!” She walked out to the sidewalk with Metal at her side. In a lower tone she mumbled, “I’d have been all alone…”

“Our souls.” Metal Sonic looked at his surroundings. “They’re connected. You’ll never be alone.”

Wendy smiled back to him. “Yeah, I feel it too, Metal.”

The blue hedgehog turned to face her. “Wendy, will you now tell me what love is?”

Looking back to him she said, “I suppose…” Wendy looked into his crimson eyes, shining with emotion. “Love is… Well I can’t exactly explain it, but it’s when your heart and soul tell you that you want to spend the rest of your life with them. They will feel it too of course, and the two souls will come together.”

Metal nodded. “I see.”

Wendy found herself closer to Metal than usual. “Why do you keep asking?” She tilted her head, heart beating at all the possible answers.

“I believe I love you.”

She nearly fell over at the words, but Metal caught her. “My soul. It’s telling me this. I know it must be true.”

“Metal, I…” The violet girl tried to say, but was at a loss of words.

“What does your soul say, Wendy?”

For a few minutes, they stood in silence, Metal’s arms still wrapped around her from when she had almost fallen. Wendy looked inside herself. No one had she felt this way for. It felt right to be with him. She knew the answer.

“I love you too.”

Metal Sonic then did something she had never seen him do yet. He smiled. His eyes were fixed above her head however. “Are you familiar with the tradition of when a person stands under a plant called mistletoe?”

Wendy gasped and looked up. Sure enough, under the sign of a building, the simple green plant stood directly over her head. “Yes…” She giggled.

Metal Sonic let out a small chuckle. “I love you.” He said as their faces slowly came towards each other.

“I love you too.” She said once again, pressing her lips against his.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
